My latest secret weapon is After the Deadline, a tool which does contextual spell check, detects misused words, and checks your grammar and style, too, all from within your browser.
We all know and hopefully use spell check in our word processing and even online. So much content is now being created directly on the web, be they numerous emails, blog posts, or even commenting on other sites or Facebook.
Most browsers have the possibility to add multiple dictionaries so that we Europeans can accommodate the second, third or even fourth language we speak and write in. But what about proper word use and grammar? Spell check can’t tell you that there should be their, or that your should be you’re.
But After the Deadline can.

After the Deadline got its inspiration from the New York Times blog of the same name about grammar. The tool is “a style checker to help new media (re: internet) writers shine” and therefore is completely online. It can be integrated into Firefox web browser, WordPress blogging platform, a bookmarklet for use with other browsers, or can be used to directly check text using the interface at www.afterthedeadline.com.
AtD, as it’s also called, will even explain many of the errors it’s highlighting so you can learn and improve your own command of the language. Just click on “Explain” when an error is presented.
At the moment After the Deadline is available in the following languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. But more languages are coming soon. Don’t see your language? AtD is open source and the source code is available, so get started!
