presented by Suzuki, the specialist for small cars.
Matalafria is a Barcelona based knitwear brand. Their main concept is to manufacture durable knit garments with an emphasis on quality and craftmanship.
I talked to Antonio Calderón, the man behind the brand, and he explained to me why he loves knitwear so much: “It gives me the chance to work with volume like no other material“.
When he started, he used to knit everything by hand “Is the best way to learn if you want to be a great knitwear designer“. Later he added to his skills computers (he is also a programmer), to create his garments by machine too.
The constant search for volume and architecture in the garments, has also a concept, usually inspired by the art world. Exhibitions, movies, books, everything helps to create unique pieces.
Antonio not only designs the garments, but also creates the prototypes of them. He hand-calibrates the machines and supervises the whole process, not missing out on any details. The production is also based in Barcelona, using materials such as Alpaca or Merino wool. Limited edition sweaters, dresses and accesories for man and woman of their last collection can be found in their online shop.
So, Antonio, could you tell us something small that is big for you?
I would say the way I work. I have my studio at home. I like the intimacy of the beginning of the design process, all the research I do, the music I listen to…the moment when the little seed begins to grow, and that eventually, when the garment is finished, will reach people from around the world thanks to internet.
